Armando Ortega Medina

Armando (Mando) Ortega Medina, 65, passed away at his home in Oracle on Tuesday, November 27, 2012. He was born January 9, 1947 to Pablo and Delfi na Medina

in Washington Camp, Arizona. On February 8, 1971 he married Dolores Ramos and together they made their home in Mammoth. Armando was a dedicated

Armando Ortega MedinaJehovah’s Witness who loved talking to others about Jehovah’s promise of a paradise on earth and he believed in the resurrection. He also enjoyed hunting, fi shing, golfi ng, cooking and spending time with his

family and friends. Survivors include his wife Dolores; his son, Armando (Dora) Medina Jr.; daughters, Esperanza (Dwayne) Shepherd, Anita (Gabriel) Gastelum, Rebecca Medina, Alondra Medina and Bertha Medina; six grandchildren, Daniel and Leanna Hernandez, Shania and Dezmarae Shepherd and Kayla and Kaylee Medina; brothers, Pablo (Yolanda) Medina, Bernardo (Gina) Medina, Fernando (Helen) Medina, Ruben (Becky) Medina and Sergio (Vera) Medina;

sister, Lupe (Raymond) Leybas; and many nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister, Delfi nita Medina. His favorite Bible scriptures regarding the resurrection were John 5: 28 & 29 and John 11:25. He was greatly loved by family and friends and will be missed but forever in our hearts. Aggravated assault involving a juvenile was reported at Hayden-Win-kelman Schools.Dec. 4 Agency assist with a medical call on Lobo Lane. Extra patrol was request-ed on Lobo Lane regarding live stock damaging lawns. Agency assist to Kearny Police Department and DPS with a rock slide on Hwy 177. The roadway was cleared of debris and turned over to DPS.

Waddell After posting a big win over the tall Globe High School Tiger team on Tuesday and then having a rough time with the speedy and aggressive Panthers of Superior High on Thursday, the Hayden Lobo basketball team packed their gear and headed for Tucson to play in the nine-team St. Au-gustine Basketball Tournament on Saturday Dec. 8. The Lobos started tourna-ment matched up against the

Knights of Immaculate Heart High. The Lobo running game, behind the scoring of Julian Gomez and Marcos Gonzales and the tough defense of Adri-an Ochoa, proved too much for the Knights falling behind after the first half of play 28-18. Gonzales cooled off in the second half but Gomez con-tinued with his hot hand and Ochoa’s tough defense got stronger leading the Lobos to a 64-51 win over the Knights. Gomez finished the game

with 31 points followed by 11 points from Michael Rabago and Marcos Gonzales. Adrian Ochoa had only five points but was a monster on the defensive end of the court. Matt Martinez, Eric Rivera and Gabriel Ramos each scored two points. The Lobos next pool game was against the Wolves of Alta Vista High School, a run and gun team that got beat by an-other running team, the Lobos. Behind the scoring of Julian

Gomez and Michael Rabago, the Lobos took an 11-point lead into the half time break with a 35-24 score. The second half was also hot and furious and the Wolves got a break when the tough de-fensive play of Adrian Ochoa went to the bench with an ill-ness. The tough defense of the Lobos did not stop with Ochoa on the bench and it was obvi-ous that the Wolves were run-ning out of gas trying to keep up with Lobos.

With the Lobos increas-ing their lead by as much as 25 points, the Lobo coaches decided to give their reserve players some playing time. The final buzzer had the Wolves breathing hard and the Lobos celebrating a 65-49 win to take the number one spot from their pool and a spot in the semi-finals against another tough running team, the San Tan Foothills High School Sabercats. Julian Gomez had a big

game for the Lobos against the Wolves scoring 40 points. Michael Rabago pumped in 17 points for the Lobos with Mar-cos Gonzales getting six Lobo points. Adrian Ochoa scored only two points before leaving the game with an illness. The Lobos again were matched with a team that liked to run in the semi-finals of the tournament and again the run-ning Lobos proved to be too much for the Sabercats of San

Waddell The Lady Lobo basketball team took on the Lady Tigers of Globe High School and the Lady Panthers of Superior High School last week with very little success mainly coming from their inability to put the basketball in the basket. The Lady Tigers were on the Hayden court on Tuesday Dec. 4 quickly taking a six-point lead over the Lady Lobos in the first quarter when the Lobos could only come up with two points to trail 2-8.

The Lady Lobos fought back in the second quarter picking up their scoring but the Lady Tigers kept matching their output to go into the locker room at halftime with a 9-16 lead. The scoring by both teams picked up in the third quarter and again the Tigers kept matching the Lobo scores to take a 22-31 lead at the end of three quarters of play. Just like in the first quarter, the scoring went by the way side for the Lobos only able to score two

Tan Foothills controlling the boards and going into transi-tion faster than the Sabercats. The score at the end of the first half was 28-21 Lobos. The running continued in the sec-ond half and again the Lobos seemed to be in better condi-tion outrunning the Sabercats

with a score of 62-49. Julian Gomez again took scoring honors for the Lobos with 25 points followed by Michael Rabago with 14 points. Adrian Ochoa scored 12 points, Marcos Gonzales had nine points and Eric Ri-vera had two Lobo points. Waiting for the Lobos in the championship game was a team that matched up well

with the Lobo style of play, the running Warriors of Baboquiv-ari High School. It was a battle of each team’s big scorer, Julian Gomez for the Lobos and the Warrior’s Norman Wolfchief. For the first time in the tour-nament the Lobos were on the wrong side of the score at the halftime break trailing the Warriors 18-22 when the

buzzer went off. The scoring by the big men was at a stand-still with both scoring eleven first half points. The second half was played just as hard as the first with the Lobo team playing a bit harder on defense. The scoring battle continued between Gomez and Wolfchief but the rest of the Lobo team came together to out score Wolfchief’s team-mates to take an exciting 47-43 win over the Warriors and claim the first place trophy of the St. Augustine Basketball Tournament. Julian Gomez won the scor-ing battle with Wolfchief, 29-24 with Gomez getting scoring help from Adrian Ochoa with

nine points and another tough defensive game and Michael Rabago scoring seven points to go with his rebounding. Eric Rivera had two points in the Lobos championship game win. The Lobos have two tough games coming up this week beginning with a visit by the big, tall and running Bearcat team from Ray High on Mon-day Dec. 10. It will be just as tough on Wednesday Dec, 12 when the always hard play-ing San Carlos High School Braves come to Lobo Gym. Both games will have a 4 p.m. start time with the JV teams on the court first fol-lowed by the Lady Lobos at

5:30 p.m. and the varsity con-test at 7 p.m. The Lobos will end the week of play taking on the Knights of Immaculate Heart on Friday Dec. 14. Next week the Lobos will be on the road traveling to Tucson, along with the Lady Lobos, on Tuesday Dec. 18 for the return game against the Immaculate Heart Knights. There will be no JV games for the Lobos in the two games against the Knights. The Lobos teams will board the bus on Wednesday Dec. 19 for a trip to San Manuel for a battle with the Miner basketball teams starting at 4 p.m. with the JV teams on the court first.

fourth quarter points to lose the game 24-38. Cheyanne Gaona led Lady Lobo scoring with eight points. Ashley Cruz and Melinda Marinez each scored fi ve points for the Lobos. Devin Estrada playing hard under the boards and on defense scored four points with Kyana Garcia also tough under the boards and defense had two Lobo points. The lack of scoring again haunted the Lady Lobos when the Superior Lady Panthers came to Lobo Gym on Thursday Dec. 6. Playing hard defense kept the game close for the Lobos in the fi rst quarter trailing by two points at the end of the fi rst period, 4-6. The scoring picked up in the second period unfortunately it was the team in black jerseys that did the damage outscoring the Lady Lobos 6-14 in the period to take a 10-20 lead at the end of the fi rst half.

The second half turned into a defensive battle between the Lobos and Panthers with neither team able to score in double fi gures in the fi nal two stanzas. The fi nal score ended 23-29 in favor of the Panthers. Cheyanne Gaona again led the Lady Lobo scoring with 13 points and played very well defensively. Ashley Cruz had fi ve Lobo points with Kyana Garcia and Melinda Marinez each scoring two points. Devin Estrada again playing tough under the boards and on defense had one point. The young Lady Lobo team will have three tough games next week starting on Monday when the Lady Bearcats of Ray High come to Lobo Gym. Things will not get easier for the Lady Lobos when the tall, run and gun Lady Braves of San Carlos High School come to Lobo Gym on Wednesday Dec 12. A team that gave the Lobos fi ts last year, the Lady Knights of Immaculate Heart High School, will be on the Lobo court on Friday Dec. 14.

By Mila Besich-Lira Residents in Kearny are in-vited to a reception honoring Gary Birkett and Zola Hall. The district is recognizing these individuals for their many years of service to the Ray Unified School Board. The reception will begin at 7:30 p.m. at the District Of-fice on Thursday, December 13, 2012. The two have served the district for a combined 48 years. The Copper Basin News met with the two to talk about their longtime service

to the district and what they will miss most about serving the district and what they felt were the most challenging things about being a board member. Gary Birkett has served on the Ray Unified School district for 20 years, with the exception of one term that he did not run. He began his board service in 1992. Birkett said one of the most challenging things about be-ing a board member is never really knowing how much money the district would re-

ceive each year. “It is not always financial problems,” he said “Some-times we get so focused on

the small issues like busses, and cafeteria issues that we end up not focusing on the academic issues.” Birkett said

he is going to miss meeting the new teachers, staff and students. He said he is glad to see new members elected to the board that have children in the district. His son graduated two years ago so he felt it was time for others “who have skin in the game” to serve on the board. Hall has served the board for 28 years. A longtime Copper Basin area resident Hall can remember when the commu-nities of Kearny and Hayden were bustling and when Kearny and Scottsdale were the communities who had the highest salaries per capita in the state. Hall explained that the most challenging times serving on the board were times when the administration was chang-ing and of course the difficult financial situations the board often faced. “It is especially hard when we lose longtime teachers, it

is so difficult to find teachers to come to our schools,” she said. When asked what she is go-ing to miss most about being a board member, Hall replied “I am going to miss being a board member, we have always had a good board, we have never had the rage other boards in the area have had and we have always agreed to disagree at times.” Advice to the new board members, both Hall and Birkett gave some advice to the incoming board members. “Keep in mind that you are there for the students, it is easy to forget that” explained Birkett. Hall recommended that new board members not have a personal agenda and also suggested that they network and learn from the Arizona School Board As-sociation. Both Hall and Birkett ex-plained that they would have liked to see the Ray and Hayden-Winkelman School districts combine. “I don’t think we worked hard enough to try and com-bine the districts,” explained Hall. Both felt that if the districts were to combine at some point they could be much stronger. Birkett also explained that he would like to see the Ray school district add more vocational programs and consider joining the Co-bre Valley Institute of Tech-nology (CVIT). During the interview both joked about their often differ-ences but both agreed if they had one request to the Arizona State Legislature they would ask that law makers think about how legislation they make affects small and rural schools and both agreed that they would like to see more technology be introduced into the district including maybe online courses in the future. “The school district is in good hands and it is time for us to ride off into the sunset,” said Birkett.
