New Ancient CrocodileSpecies Discovered, ‘ButtonTooth Crocodile’ Identified

By ‘Sheer Serendipity’

Two fossils found threemonths apart were found to fittogether perfectly to make acomplete skull of a completelynew crocodile species.

The ancient species,K o u m p i o d o n t o s u c h u saprosdokiti, which means the"unexpected button toothedcrocodile," was discovered onthe Isle of Wight, a county lo-cated in the English Channel. The findings, published in theActa Palaeontologica Polonica, describe the new species asmeasuring 2 feet long and liv-ing about 126 million yearsago. “The sheer serendip-ity of this discovery is quite bi-zarre,” Dr. Steve Sweetman,a paleontologist from the Uni-versity of Portsmouth, said ina statement. “Finding the twoparts is in itself remarkable. That they should be foundthree months apart by differ-ent collectors and taken to themuseum where the samemembers of staff were on dutyand therefore able to recall thefirst specimen defies belief!”

The first part of thetiny skull was found by DianeTrevarthen, while on a fossil-hunting holiday with her fam-ily. She later brought the fossilto the museum, Dinosaur Isle, believing it belonged to one ofthe island’s well-known largercrocodiles from the Creta-ceous period.

It was only threemonths later, when two otherfossil hunters found a tinyfragment of a skull, did the staff

from the Dinosaur Isle mu-seum decide to compare thetwo discoveries. The twospecimens, one of the backhalf of the skull and the otherof its snout, fit togetherperfectly. At first, Sweetmanthought the fossils belonged toa crocodile known asBernissartia fagesii.

“I was convinced itwas a Bernissartia skull be-cause of its small size – thefully grown animal was only alittle over 2 feet long from noseto tail – but particularly be-cause of its button-shapedteeth, which are unique amongcrocodyliforms. They wereused to crush mollusc shellsand other invertebrates withtough outer coatings,”Sweetman said.

Sweetman took acloser look at the find and dis-covered the way the boneswere arranged in the ancientreptile’s skull differed from hispreviously held theory. Specifi-cally, the bones of the palateand the inner opening of theairway of the nose were notpositioned the way he ex-pected.

“The location of thehole in the mouth, where theairway from the nose opens, was surrounded by bones atthe very back of the palate,”Sweetman said. “This tells usthat the discovery is not onlya new species but also a newgenus of ancient croc closelyrelated to, but subtly differentto those alive today.”
