KARNATAKA STEEL INDUSTRYREELING UNDER MINING BAN

New Delhi: Reeling under raw materialshortages and the extension of a miningban, the multi-billion dollar Karnatakasteel industry is in the doldrums dueto continuing uncertainty over ironore supply to their plants.

The jittery industry was not evenoptimistic over the release of 25 milliontonnes (MT) of iron ore, lying at variousmines in the southern state, as themodalities are yet to be worked out.

“Most of the iron ore is lying at theprivately owned mines. Suppose themine owner refuses to share his stock, then what will you do? 25.88 milliontonnes availability, which is beingtalked about, is an ideal scenario only,”said a senior official of one of the af-fected companies in the region.

Echoing similar sentiments, officialsof Kirloskar Ferrous, which runs a50,000-tonne unit for grey iron castings, said, “Quality of the stock is also a bigconcern. About 11 MT of the said 25MT of iron ore is lower grade, havingbelow 60 Fe content, and that can notbe used by most of the companies inKarnataka.”

Officials of JSW Steel, which operatesa 20 MT iron ore beneficiation plantin the region together with its 10 MTsteel plant, also expressed similar con-cerns over the quality of iron ore stockslying at mines in the state.

“Quality of the iron ore (stocks atthe mines) is not yet established. Wecan do some beneficiation of ore, butif the Fe content is below 55, thenthere is a problem,” the JSW officialssaid.

Citing the matter as subjudice, allthe officials refused to be identified.

On Friday, the apex court had saidit would allow the release of raw ma-terial lying at various mines in thestate for the iron and steel industry, even as it extended its ban on miningactivities to the Chitradurga andTumkur districts, after Bellary.

The court had also asked the AmicusCuriae and Attorney General to providedetails on the quantity of iron ore that

could be released from the existingstock of 25 million tonnes, subject toreclamation and rehabilitation plan(s)being submitted before the next hearingon September 2.

“The only silver lining is that thecourt is willing to release some quantity(of the iron ore stock). But we don’tknow how much and when. Even if 15MT is made available, we can run ourunits at about 80 per cent capacity,”JSW officials said. .

However, other companies were notas optimistic as JSW Steel. According

to them, extension of the ban to theTumkur and Chitradurga districtswould add to their woes, as most ofthe units do not have stocks of ironore.

“It’s just like asking a patient sittingon the death bed to wait one moreweek to get treated,” officials of Kir-loskar Ferrous said, adding, “We aretrying to run at least one blast furnaceso that we could continue producingscastings. We don’t know how long wecan continue.”

Kirloskar, which supplies iron cast-

ings to about 15 automobile and trac-tor-makers, is currently running athalf of its installed capacity and hasshut down one of its two blast fur-naces.

Echoing similar sentiments, officialsof Kalyani Steel, which has shut downits 1.1 MTPA plant said, “Our costswould increase by about Rs 2,000 to2,500 per tonne, as we now have tobring iron ore from other states likeOrissa and Jharkhand.

We are clueless on how to run ouroperations.”

The companies also said that NMDC– the only company allowed by theSupreme Court to carry out miningactivities in state – has failed to raiseits production levels to the desiredlevels.

According to the Bangalore Chamberof Industry and Commerce, till lastweek, NMDC was producing around21,000 tonnes to 22,000 tonnes of ironore a day, while the company is re-quired to produce 33,000 tonnes dailyto achieve the desired level of one mil-lion tonnes per month stipulated bythe apex court.

The chamber has also estimated thedaily demand of the iron and steel in-dustry in the state at 1,04,000 tonnes,of which the Tumkur and Chitradurgadistricts together contributed about20,000 tonnes a day before impositionof the ban by the apex court.

“Supply position is very-very tight.NMDC has not been able to raise itsproduction, while now we can notsource iron ore even from Tumkur andChitradurga. We don’t know what todo,” a senior Mukand Steel officialsaid, adding, “We are mobilising somestocks from our units in other state.”

According to industry sources, 22out of 60 sponge iron plants in thestate have shut down their operationsfor want of raw material, while manyother companies like JSW Steel, BMMIspat and Sathavahana Ispat, amongothers, have resorted to operating atreduced capacities.

Karnataka produces 16 milliontonnes iron and steel in a year, whichis a little less than 25 per cent of thecountry’s total production.

The state contributes more than afifth of India’s total iron ore production, which is around 220 million tonnesannually.

Out of the total production in thestate, about 80 per cent comes fromthe Bellary-Hospet region, at about40 million tonnes per annum, whilethe Tumkur and Chitradurga districtscontribute the remaining output. PTI

Hegde: Foundation is laidbut donʼt expect miracle

Bangalore: Team Anna memberN Santosh Hegde saluted Par-liament for rising to the occasionand giving its nod to key elementsof Jan Lokpal bill, but cautionedthat people should “not expecta miracle” as enacting the legis-lation will “take its own time”.

He was also against exerting“more pressure” on Parliamenton the issue now. “I am surethey (Parliament) will under-stand the necessity for quick en-actment because that will bringglory for them (Parliamentarians)also,” the former Supreme Court

Judge, who was part of the jointLokpal bill drafting panel, said.

“We have achieved the firstmilestone in having a strong Lok-pal Act and it may take its owntime – it’s not something youcan expect today, tomorrow ornext month,” he said, adding,“Let not the people of India ex-pect a miracle. But we have justput the foundation for a strongLokpal bill.”

He said what Parliament hasdone for the people of India “atleast in this regard...may be be-cause of Anna’s efforts… is some-

thing great.“I thank each one of them.

Parliament has risen to the oc-casion. We do share a part ofthe victory with Parliament”,Hegde, who till recently servedas Karnataka Lokayukta, said.Hesaid the agitation for a strongand effective Lokpal, spearhead-ed by Hazare has achieved a lot.“It’s a victory for the people ofIndia. Anna has achieved for thepeople of India.”

Hegde said the governmentshould continue to respect thefeelings of the people. .

With hurdles cleared for astrong and effective anti- cor-ruption law, Hegde said the focusshould now be on issues of elec-toral and police reforms andblack-money besides implemen-tation of certain reports, includ-ing that on illegal mining thathe submitted to the KarnatakaGovernment last month whenhe was the Lokayukta.

While it’s important to keepthe momentum going, he felt the tempo may not be thesame as one witnessed for JanLokpal bill. PTI

Advanced surgery at Narayana Nethralaya Bangalore: Narayana Nethra laya, one ofthe leading eye care hospitals in the state, held a live demonstration of new technolo-gies on “Refractive Lens” and “Cornea” sur-geries. The live session was part of a work-shop, Seeing is Believing, organised jointlyby Narayana Nethralaya Postgraduate In-stitute of Ophthalmology, Karnataka Oph-thalmic Society and Bangalore OphthalmicSociety. It was inaugurated by Dr K SSriprakash, vice-chancellor, Rajiv GandhiUniversity of Health Sciences.

Cataract and refractive error contributeto more than 80% of avoidable blindnessin the country as per the recent statisticsfrom Vision 2020 India Forum. Even wheresurgical services are available, low vision

associated with cataract and uncorrectedrefractive errors continue to be high, one ofthe reasons being lack of awareness andinformation among the general population.

“But thanks to medical and surgical ad-vancements in recent years, newer optionsof intraocular lenses in cataract surgery andemerging technologies in the field of re-fractive corneal surgeries are available to-day,” said Dr K Bhujang Shetty, chairman& managing director, Narayana Nethralaya.

Earlier, performing these surgeries wasconsidered a daunting task considering therisks involved. However, with the introduc-tion of new technologies, the success rateof surgeries relating to refractive lens andcornea has increased.

UNSCIENTIFIC METHODS, RAIN TURN ROADS INTO NIGHTMARE

Aknisree KarthikBangalore Beat Bureau

Bangalore: With heavy rains lashingthe city over the last few days, roadshere are shot, turning them into deathtraps. Especially affected are the two-wheeler riders, who have to meandertheir way through pothole-ridden roads.Even on some of the main thoroughfaresof the city, the ride has become a night-mare.

Bangalore Beat visited some of theprominent parts of the city for a realitycheck and there have been many inci-dents of two-wheeler riders skiddingand falling, as gravel has come off. Thereason is also the badly maintaineddrains which do not take the load forcingrain water to flow on the road. At mostof the junctions there is a mass of sand, gravel and big sized stones, hamperingthe flow of traffic.

Experts say city’s roads have notbeen laid scientifically. There are manytowns and cities that receive more rainthan Bangalore, but still have betterroads. It is all about planning and exe-cution, they say.

Prof M N Sreehari of R V College ofEngineering, who is also traffic engi-neering expert and consultant to thestate government, said, “The BruhatBangalore Mahanagara Palike shouldbe held responsible for the whole mess. The city has a poor drainage system, which does not drain away water from

the roads. This results in water flowing on roads and stagnating, af-fecting their longevity. Potholes too arefilled with water, turning roads into abigger mess.”

“Longitudinal slope should be built

along with transfer slopes. It will ensurethat the water is drained in no time. Also the methods adopted during roadconstruction are very unscientific. Poor quality materials used for con-struction make things only worse. The

potholes must be filled with two layersand each layer must be compacted verywell. The joints must be sealed so thatthey won’t reflect during rains,” the ex-pert added.

BBMP town planning standing com-

mittee chairman C K Ramamurthy said,“We have started filling up potholes. We will intensify the activity and ensurethat the unwanted gravel, sand andstones are cleaned up as early so thatno commuters are hit.”

Wrong cop went withKatta to hospital

Manjunath SharmaBangalore Beat Bureau

Bangalore: Former IT ministerKatta Subramanya Naidu, whohas been arrested for his allegedinvolvement in illegal land dealcases and has been admitted toVictoria Hospital over health is-sues, is in news again for anotherwrong reason.

This time, it is for the wrongpoliceman accompanying himat the time of his checkup atJayadeva Institute of Cardiology.Katta was admitted in the emer-gency ward of the hospital onAugust22, at 12.50 pm.

As he was an undertrial, hehad to fill up the form at thehospital and give information, including his name, age, father’sname etc along with his thumbimpression. As per the medicolegal procedure, the ones whobring him to the hospital tooshould give their personal in-formation and sign the register. The register has the names ofDr Surya and police constableGirish.

What is puzzling is that thepolice constable Girish (PC No-1050) is attached to Adugodi po-lice station law and order wing.According to a letter written bythe chief superintendent of theParappana Agrahara CentralPrison, from where Katta wasbrought for medical complica-tions, the former minister wasto be accompanied by a CityArmed Reserve or a KarnatakaState Reserve Police constable.

The issue has raised doubtsin the minds of Lokayukta police, who had to spend a lot of timeto nab one of the most powerfulministers of former chief ministerYeddyurappa cabinet.

Bangalore: Freedom Park, which was the hub on anti-cor-ruption protest in the city show-ing support to Gandhian AnnaHazare’s fast in New Delhi, isempty, now that a major battlehas been won with Parliamentagreeing to pass a Lokpal bill.

Quite strangely, a heap offootwear has been left behindby protesters who took part inthe struggle coordinated by thenon-government organisationIndia Against Corruption forthe last 13 days. The huge crowdat the venue has forced someof the protesters lose theirfootwear.

The pile only got higher yes-terday when a rally saw thou-sand of the people descendingon the venue. Since it was aweekend, many professionalscame along with their familymembers, crowding the Free-dom Park. Some of the footwearleft behind are expensive and branded whose price could range from Rs 1,000 toRs 2,500.

Purushotham, a volunteerwith the India against Corrup-tion, said, “We dismantled thestage yesterday, and saw morethan 500 pairs of footwear leftbehind by the participants. Wehave handed the park back tothe BBMP. But the ones whohave lost their footwear can go

back to Freedom Park and col-lect them.”

Vendors are waitingfor another big event

Corn, peanut and cucumbersellers made a killing in the 13days of protest at the FreedomPark. Now that the show is over, they are waiting for anotherbig event of this magnitude tomake a killing.

On all 13 days of the protets, there were a number of these

small time merchants, whowould pitch their tent quiteearly in the morning and goback quite satisfied with theirearnings. The city, like in mostparts of the country, had notseen such a crowd gather atone place for such a long time.

The weather too helped thevendors as it was a bit chillythrough the days of protest. While many carried baskets tothe venue, there were otherswho had parked their carts justoutside Freedom Park, servingout their ware.

Volunteers back to theirworks after 15 days

Around 200-250 volunteers, who dedicatedly worked without any rest to make thiscampaign successful, returnedto their work today after a busy schedule of nearly a fort-night.

When some of these IndiaAgainst Corruption volunteersmanaged vehicles at the park-ing lot, others helped by stick-ing posters across the venue.

Some volunteers served wa-ter to thirsty protesters, whilesome took care of mobile toi-lets. Many others were seencontinuously cleaning thepark.

“Battle won, but the war isyet to be!!!!” chorused the vol-unteers who returned back totheir works today.

Following this, the civic bodyissued a high tide alert.

“A tide measuring 4.63 mtrwill hit the coast around 12.15pm. Any tide above 4.50 mtr is ahigh tide,” a civic official said.

The weather bureau forecastsintermittent rains in parts of cityand suburbs besides heavy tovery heavy rains accompainedby strong gusty winds will occurin some areas. Following inces-sant rains, the water levels atMithi river have rose to 4.2 mtr.

“Several hutments near theMithi river have been evacuated,”civic officials said.

Also, 33 people from a resortin Palghar were evacuated bythe Mumbai Fire Brigade.

The BMC has also closed allits civic-run schools in the citytoday due to heavy downpour.

Trains services on Central andHarbour line were closed tem-porarily following water logging

on railway tracks.“Train services on Central Rail-

GAMBHIR LIKELY TO COME BACKLeicester: With little improvement inhis agonising condition in the last 10days, India’s opener Gautam Gambhircould be packing his bags to returnhome.

In what could be a big blow to thecampaign of the defending world cham-pions in the forthcoming one-day series,Gambhir is likely to suffer the fate ofthe likes of Zaheer Khan, Yuvraj Singh,Harbhajan Singh and Virender Sehwagwho came or joined the Indian squadand left without lending significantlyto the team’s cause.

India has been whitewashed 4-0 inthe Test series; lost their number oneTest rankings and is in danger of sufferinga similar debilitating fate in the one-day series, starting with the first gamein Chester-le-Street on September 3.

Gambhir had backpedalled to catcha pull by Kevin Pietersen at mid-on onthe second day of the final Test at theOval on August 19 but tripped and fellon his head and subsequently suffered

from a blurred vision. He didn’t open in both innings of the

Oval Test and came down late in the or-der, contributing little by way of runs.

Since then, he has visited doctors andgot MRI scans done which have shownclean results, yet Gambhir’s conditionhasn’t improved.

Gambhir’s case could be similar tothe one suffered by South African fastbowler Dale Steyn during the Champions’league last year when he too hadbackpedalled to take catch MichaelHussey in a semi-final clash betweenChennai Super Kings and Royal Chal-lengers bangalore and fell on his head.

Steyn’s MRI scans too showed littlebut the paceman took 3-4 weeks to gethimself sorted out.

By the looks of it, Gambhir could alsosuffer a similar fate and be out of actionfor 3-4 weeks, putting in doubt even hisparticipation when England pay a returnvisit to India for a one-day series inearly October. PTI

No power to alter Prezorder on clemency: Jaya

Chennai: Tamil Nadu chief min-ister J Jayalalithaa today saidshe has no power to alter thePresidential order rejecting theclemency plea of the three RajivGandhi assassins.

Making a suo moto statementin the Assembly, Jayalalithaasaid, “I don’t have any power toalter the Presidential order re-jecting the mercy petitions ofthe three,” -- Murugan, Perari-valan and Santhan.

She appealed to political par-ties “not to send signals” thatshe had powers to overturn thePresidential orders and save thethree from the gallows.

The three, sentenced to deathin the Rajiv Gandhi assassinationcase, are scheduled to be hangedon Sept 9.

The President had twice re-jected their mercy petitions ofthe three who were awarded thecapital punishment by a SpecialCourt here, which was upheldby the Madras High Court andthe Supreme Court.

Charging the DMK presidentM Karunanidhi with adopting“double standards” and enactinga “fake drama”, Jayalalithaa saidKarunanidhi, when he was ChiefMinister, had recommended to

the Governor to reject the mercypetitions of the three and com-mute the death sentence of Nali-ni, to life.

A decision in this regard wastaken on April 19, 2000 at a cab-inet meeting chaired byKarunanidhi, she said.

It is wrong to say that theChief Minister had powers tocommute the death sentenceand save the three lives, Jay-alalithaa said and expressed sur-prise why some political leaderswere making such remarks while“knowing well the legal issuesinvolved”.

Only the President and the

Governors has the powers tocommute death sentences, shenoted.

She rejected the contentionof political leaders that Consti-tution gives powers to the Stategovernment under Article 161.

She said the Union Home Min-istry had in 1991, made it clearthat when a petition for grant ofpardon in death sentences hasearlier been rejected by the Pres-ident, it would not be open forthe State government to invokeArticle 161 to commute the deathsentence.

“However, if there is a changeof circumstances or if any newmaterial is available, the con-demned person himself or any-one on his behalf may make afresh application to the Presidentfor reconsideration of the earlierorder. Once the President hasrejected a mercy petition, all fu-ture applications in this behalfshould be addressed to andwould be dealt with by the Pres-ident,” she quoted the HomeMinistry’s directive.

Almost all major political par-ties, barring the AIADMK andthe Congress have appealed tothe Chief Minister to interveneto save the life of the three. PTI

A Bangalore lad at a recent competitionfor the fastest fingers solved the Cube in14.56 seconds flat. If you think you could

have come second, think again. The secondboy was just a whizz slower at 17.03 secondsand the third place went to a girl who fin-ished it in 17.86 seconds.

The winner of this super kid show, Ber-nett Orlando, talks about logical thinkingand algorithmic calculations to solve a merepuzzle. The competition was BangaloreCube Challenge 2011, and 75 Rubik’s Cubelovers participated in the event held re-cently at Forum Mall in Koramangala. Most of them were young students from dif-ferent schools across the city. It was con-ducted as per the norms stipulated by theWorld Cube Association (WCA).

The contest was held at two levels, am-ateur and professional. Children in the agegroup of four to 14 participated. Sreeramstood second, while Manasi came third.

Bangalore Beat asked Orlando whatmade a champion like him? “It is nothingbut constant practice every day. I wascompletely preoccupied with the cubeand practiced for almost eight hours a day. That is what helped me. But I need to thankmy father John Louis who put me ontomind games when I was just seven. He en-couraged me to solve the Rubik’s Cube. Asthe years progressed, I picked up speed.”

Bernett Orlando is already an estab-lished name in the cube challenge circuit, having taken part in various formats of thecompetition nationally and international-ly. He was the winner of National CubeChallenge thrice, winning the competitionin 2008, 2009 and 2010. This is his fourthvictory.

The first time he won the internationalcompetition at Hague in the Netherlands in2006. He clocked 14 seconds to win thecompetition. He followed it up with anothervictory in the 4th Rubik’s cube worldchampionship in 2007 in Budapest, Hun-gary, by clocking 14 seconds again in the3x3x3 category.

In the blindfolded, 5x5x5 category, hewon the competition in 55 seconds. Askedhow he could do it despite being blind-folded, the 15-year-old Orlando, who isstudying in the 10th standard at MontfortSchool in Bangalore, said: “My father isknown as an authority in memory map-ping. He trained me to focus using this skill. Before going for blindfolded contest, onehas to study the cube for nearly 10 minutesto understand the position of differentblocks. Once you know, the colours, youjust plunge into it. You should under-stand where the cubes are falling with eachmove and calculate the next move.”

Women waste50bn litres

London: Women who shave their legs in theshower waste about 50 billion litres of water a yearthat is equivalent to four weeks of supply in a citylike London, a new research has claimed.

Thames Water, the UK’s largest water and sew-erage company which commissioned the study, said the amount of water wasted in the showerwould be enough to supply the whole of Londonfor about 25 days, the Daily Telegraph reported.

The research also found that one in four peo-ple leave the sink tap running while they brushtheir teeth, which accounts for around 120 billionlitres of water wasted per year.

A spokesman for Thames Water said: “It mayseem like it’s always raining, but we’ve had belowaverage rainfall across our region for nine of thepast 12 months.

“Our research proves that the majority of peo-ple have a ‘water conscience’ with more than 90per cent of people saying they would feel guiltyabout wasting water.

People choosehigher‑paying

jobs even if theyare unhappy

London: “Lack of money is the root of all evil”,Irish playwright George Bernard Shaw once said. Now, a new survey has found that most people intoday’s world prefer higher-paying jobs even if theyknow it can make them unhappy.

Economists at Cornell University asked morethan 2,500 people what would make them happier– 50,000 pounds job with “reasonable” hours al-lowing them 7.5 hours sleep or one paying 90,000pounds with “unusual” hours allowing them sixhours of shut-eye.

The subjects were asked, if push came toshove, which of the two jobs they would actual-ly choose.

The economists found that more respondentchose the higher income job than thought itwould make them the happier, showing thatsome people pick it despite knowing it would leadto a less happy life, ‘The Daily Telegraph’ report-ed.

Pressed about their motivation many said theyfelt picking the better paid job would make theirfamily happier.

Others said they would enjoy the greater socialstatus that came with the role while some said itwould give them a greater sense of purpose.

Alex Rees-Jones, one of the researchers, said hebelieved that the findings had political implica-tions.

“Our research suggests that if governmentschoose to design policies to maximise happinessmeasured in their surveys, they might impose poli-cies that people would not want for themselves,”he said. PTI

Planet made of diamonds!London: In what could be called agem of a discovery, astronomersclaim to have found a planet entire-ly made of diamonds.

An international team of scientists, who reported their discovery in thejournal Science, said they have un-earthed a once-massive star in theMilky Way that has been trans-formed into a small planet made ofthe precious rock.

The team – made up of scientistsfrom Australia, Italy, Germany,Britain and the US – first detected anunusual star, called a pulsar, and fol-lowed up their discovery using a tel-escope based in an observatory inCheshire.

It led the scientists to discover thegravitational pull of a small com-panion planet orbiting the pulsar, theDaily Mail reported.

Pulsars are small spinning starsmore than ten miles in diameter – thesize of a small city – that emit a beamof radio waves.

The researchers think that the“diamond planet” is all that remainsof the original star, most of whosematter was siphoned off towardsthe pulsar.

The companion planet is small, atless than 40,000 miles wide – aboutfive times the diameter of Earth.

But it is so close to the pulsar thatif it were a bit bigger it would havebeen ripped apart by the gravita-tional force of the star, which rotatesmore than 10,000 times per minuteand has a mass of about 1.4 timesthat of the sun.

“This remnant is likely to be large-ly carbon and oxygen, because a starmade of lighter elements like hy-drogen and helium would be too bigto fit the measured orbiting times,”said research team member DrMichael Keith of the Commonwealth

Scientific and Industrial Research Or-ganisation in Australia.

The density means that this ma-terial is certain to be crystalline, that is, a large part of the star may besimilar to a diamond, the researcherssaid.

The pulsar, dubbed PSR J1719-1438, and its planet are part of theMilky Way’s plane of stars and lie4,000 light-years away in the con-stellation of Serpens.

The modulations in the radio puls-es told astronomers a number ofthings about the planet.

It orbits the pulsar in just twohours and ten minutes, and the dis-tance between the two objects isabout 373,000 miles – a little lessthan the radius of our sun.

Despite its small size, the planethas slightly more mass than Jupiter.About 70 per cent of millisecond pul-sars have companions of some kind.

Astronomers think it is the com-panion that, in its star form, trans-forms an old, dead pulsar into a mil-lisecond pulsar by transferring mat-ter and spinning it up to a very highspeed.

The result is a fast-spinning mil-lisecond pulsar with a shrunkencompanion – most often a so-calledwhite dwarf. PTI

Evolutionary change takes 1m yrsWashington: Although it’s aconstant and sometimes rapidprocess, evolutionary changestakes one million years, say sci-entists.

A new study, published in the‘Proceedings of the NationalAcademy of Sciences’ journal, combined for the first time datafrom short periods such as 10 to100 years with much longer evi-dence found in fossil record overmillions of years.

It determined that rapidchanges in local populations of-ten don’t continue, stand thetest of time or spread through aspecies.

In other words, just becausehumans are two or three inchestaller now than they were 200years ago, it doesn’t mean thatprocess will continue and peoplebe two or three feet taller in2,000 years. Or even as tall in onemillion years as we are now, saythe scientists.

“Rapid evolution is clearly a re-ality over fairly short time peri-ods, sometimes just a few gen-

erations,” said lead author JosefUyeda of Oregon State Universi-ty.

“But those rapid changes donot always persist and may beconfined to small populations. For reasons that are not com-pletely clear, the data show thelongterm dynamics of evolutionto be quite slow,” he added.

Across a broad range ofspecies, the study found that fora major change to persist and forchanges to accumulate, it tookabout one million years. PTI

London: Earning less seems to be ablessing in disguise – the richer peoplebecome the lesser they care for theirelderly parents, a new study hasfound.

The study of 2,790 American menand women found that increasing ofwages leads to a significant drop inthe amount of time people spend inhelping their parents with householdchores, errands and transport.

According to the research, for everyten per cent rise in their salary, womenwill spend 36 per cent less time pro-viding care and men will reduce theirinput by 18 per cent, the Daily Tele-graph reported.

The findings also showed that hav-ing a sibling or other person equippedto help out makes the effect evenmore severe.

Lead researcher Olena Nizalova, from the Kiev Economics Institute, said the study showed that currentglobal policies towards making careaffordable are not compatible witheach other. Providing care for the

elderly is becoming an ever more dif-ficult problem because birth rates aredeclining and people are living longerand reaching retirement in recordnumbers.

Economists have suggested that

the burden could be reduced by en-couraging more women to take jobsand raising the retirement age inorder to increase the workforce, andurging the families and friends of theelderly to provide more informal carethemselves.

But the new study indicated thatearning more money would be likelyto lower rather than raise the amountof time people spend looking aftertheir elderly relatives.

Involving an elderly person’s widerfamily and friends in their care couldalso cause their children to dramati-cally reduce the amount of time theyspend helping out as their earningsrise, it said.

The findings will be presented at ameeting of economics Nobel Laureatesin Lindau, Germany. PTI

Antidepressantscould reduce bowel,

brain cancer riskLondon: A type of drug com-monly prescribed to treat de-pression and migraines couldalso reduce the risk of bowelcancer by up to fifth, a new studyhas claimed.

Researchers at three Britishuniversities, who looked at dataof about 93,000 people, alsofound that tricyclic antidepres-sants also reduce the risk ofglioma – the most common typeof brain cancer – by up to two-thirds.

Taking larger doses for longerincreases the preventative effect, the researchers said.

Although the results are star-tling, it is highly unlikely suchdrugs, many of them are seda-tives, would be widely prescribedto those without mental healthproblems because of their side-effects.

However, the researchers areexcited because they say peopleat a genetically higher risk ofthe two types of cancer could beprescribed them, the Daily Tele-graph reported.

The finding, published in theBritish Journal of Cancer, couldalso lead to the development ofspecifically designed pharma-ceuticals to tackle bowel andbrain cancer, said Dr Tim Batesof Lincoln University.

He explained that tricyclic an-

tidepressants worked by attack-ing the “Achilles’ heel” of somecancer cells, or their mitochon-dria that enable them to func-tion.

“As cancer mitochondria arebiochemically different from mi-tochondria in normal non-cancercells, they represent an Achilles’heel,” he said.

Tricyclic antidepressants ap-peared to interfere with the nor-mal working of mitochondria inbowel and glioma cancer cells,he said.

“The cancer prevention actionof these drugs may translate intoone that is also useful in treatingglioma, both in adults and inchildren, and colorectal cancer,”he added.

The study compared about31,500 people with cancer withabout 61,500 people without, and was adjusted for age, gender, smoking, obesity and other fac-tors.

It showed that people on tri-cyclic antidepressants were be-tween 16 and 21 per cent lesslikely to have developed bowelcancer, with those who had beentaking them at higher doses forlonger receiving greater protec-tion. Bowel cancer is the secondbigger cancer killer after lungcancer, which kills 16,000 peoplea year in the UK alone.

Undernutrition in teen years can lead to heart disease

London: Teenage girls whostarve themselves to remain slimcould up their risk of heart dis-ease by up to a third later in life,a new study has claimed.

The study of almost 8,000women by researchers at theUniversity Medical Centre inUtrecht, The Netherlands, foundthat severe undernutrition duringadolescence, even for short pe-riods, can have severe conse-quences later in life.

It found that women who wereseriously deprived of food duringtheir teens, had a 27 per centhigher risk of coronary heart dis-ease in later life, rising to 38 percent in those who had been aged10 to 17 years.

Those who had suffered mod-erate hunger and weight losshad a slightly higher risk of heartdisease, though the study alsofound that the risk of stroke waslower for women who had beenundernourished than for thosewho had not, the Daily Telegraphreported.

Annet van Abeelen, who ledthe study, said: “Our study pin-points the crucial role childhood

plays in adult health.“Growth that has been ham-

pered by undernutrition in laterchildhood, followed by a sub-sequent recovery, may have meta-bolic consequences that con-tribute to an increased risk ofdiseases later in adulthood.”

For the study, published inthe European Heart Journal, theresearchers studied almost 7,845women who had been aged upto 21 during the Dutch famine in1944-45, during which officialrations slumped as low as 400-800 calories a day before thecountry was liberated from Nazi

occupation.The participants were divided

into three groups – those whohad been “severely” exposed tofamine, those who had been“hardly” exposed and thosewhose experience fell in between.

Figures showed that womenwho were severely exposed tothe famine had a 27 per centhigher risk of coronary heart dis-ease than those who were un-exposed, rising to 38 per cent inthose who were aged 10-17 atthe start of the famine.

“The Dutch famine of 1944-45 is a ‘natural experiment’ inhistory, which gave us the uniquepossibility to study the long-termeffects of acute undernutritionduring childhood, adolescence, and young adulthood in other-wise well-nourished girls andwomen,” the esearchers said.

They observed that stress during the famine may also have led to changes in behaviourwhich could impact on a person’srisk of heart disease later in life. PTI

Irene toll risesto 18 in US

Washington: The death toll in theUnited States from Hurricane Irene hasrisen to 18, with four new fatalities re-ported in the state of Pennsylvania, USofficials have said.

Six deaths have been recorded inNorth Carolina, where Irene made land-fall early Saturday morning with 85-mile (140-kilometre) per hour winds, before heading up the eastern seaboardand scoring a rare hit on New York.

Four more deaths were recorded inPennsylvania, including two men, onein a tent and another in a camper whowere crushed by falling trees.

The toll rose from eight overnightwith new fatalities including men hitby falling trees in North Carolina andVirginia, a woman in Maryland struckby a falling chimney, as well as onevictim in New Jersey.

The breakdown of fatalities was: sixin North Carolina, four in Virginia, fourin Pennsylvania, one in New Jersey, and one each in Connecticut, Floridain Maryland.

The youngest fatalities were a boykilled by a falling tree in his apartmentin Newport News, a city on a coastalpeninsula in Virginia, and a girl whodied in North Carolina.

“A 15-year-old girl was killed in a caraccident on her way back from thebeach after vacationing in North Car-olina,” explained emergency officialPatty McQuillan.

“The traffic light at the intersectionwas not working, the power was out.”

North Carolina emergency manage-ment spokesman Brad Deen said

one of the six victims in his state was a man who had a heart attack on Friday while nailing plywood over his windows in preparation for the hurricane.

Humans got immunityboost from Neanderthals

London: The key immunitygenes that help us fight virusestoday may have been passeddown by our extinct relatives, including Neanderthals, scien-tists have claimed.

Cross-breeding between an-cestors of modern humans andtheir extinct close relatives passeddown specific genes which canstill be found in our DNA, theresearchers believe.

They think that improvementsin the immune system of Homosapiens’ may also have been in-herited from the Denisovans –a now-vanished human sub-species from eastern Asia, theDaily Mail reported.

Last year, scientists discov-ered that ancient intimate rela-tions meant as much as fourper cent of the DNA of somepeople living today was Nean-derthal. A similar genetic studyshowed that up to six per centof the modern human genome,

or genetic code, was Denisovanin origin. Lead researcher DrPeter Parham, of Stanford Uni-versity, California, said cross-breeding contributed to our genepool.

He said: “The cross-breedingwasn’t just a random event that

happened, it gave somethinguseful to the gene pool of themodern human.”

Neanderthals, who lived inwestern Asia and Europe, co-existed with early modern hu-mans for several thousand yearsbefore dying out around 30,000years ago.

It is believed that Homo sapi-ens, Neanderthals and Deniso-vans split into different popu-lations from a common Africanancestor around 400,000 yearsago. For the research, publishedtoday in the journal Science, the researchers focused on im-mune system elements calledHLA genes, which are criticalto the body’s ability to identifyand destroy harmful foreign in-vaders. They are among themost variable and adaptable ofhuman genes and being flexiblehelps them stay ahead in thearms race with rapidly evolvingviruses.

Sound raises hopeon Chinese miners

Beijing: The knocking soundfrom a flooded coalmine in north-east China has raised hopes that22 miners trapped there sincepast one week could still be alive.

The sound was heard around2 a.m. Monday in response torescuers’ knocking at a 270-plusmeter deep hole that had beendrilled Sunday night, rescuerssaid.

The hole can supply ventila-tion to the area where the minersmight be trapped, and it can beused to send water and food,China Daily reported.

The flooded mine in Hei-longjiang province belongs tothe Hengtai Coal Mining Co. Theflooding occurred last Tuesdaywhen the miners were workingunderground.

Nineteen other miners man-aged to escape. Three otherswere rescued Saturday while abody of another miner was re-trieved Sunday.

The provincial governmentordered the mine to stop pro-duction in 2007, but its ownerresumed production without per-mission, the work safety bureausaid.

Novel way to control dengue

fever discoveredWashington: Scientists claim to have found a newand effective way to control dengue fever by infectingmosquitoes with a bacterium that suppresses thevirus which causes the deadly disease.

Australian and US researchers, who detailed theirstudy in the journal Nature, found that populationsof mosquitoes which cause dengue become ineffectivewhen infected with the bacterial parasite Wolbachia.

Once infected, the bacterium prevents mosquitoesfrom becoming infected by the dengue virus and itspreads rapidly through the wild mosquito population, the researchers said.

“The results show we can completely transformlocal (mosquito) populations in a few months,” saidMichael Turelli, a biologist at the University of California,Davis. “It’s natural selection on steroids.”

Dengue fever is caused by four virus strains spreadby the mosquito Aedes aegypti. The disease causeshigh fever and has been called “breakbone fever” be-cause of the joint aches and muscle pains it causes.

Dengue viruses can also cause a fatal disease, dengue hemorrhagic fever, in people who have previ-ously been infect-ed with a differentstrain of the virus.

According tothe researchers,Wolbachia istransmitted by fe-male mosquitoesto their offspring.A pair of infectedmosquitoes pro-duce slightly few-er eggs than anuninfected cou-ple, but when aninfected malemosquito mates with an uninfected female, she pro-duces no eggs at all.

That provides a big reproductive advantage to thespread of Wolbachia-infected mosquitoes, generationby generation.

It turns out that Wolbachia also suppresses variousother microbes living in the same mosquito, includingthe dengue virus. As these virus-resistant mosquitoesspread through the wild population, dengue trans-mission should dry up.

The promising results grew out of work more than20 years ago by Dr Turelli and Ary Hoffmann, now atthe University of Melbourne in Australia, who firstdescribed what turned out to be Wolbachia spreadingamong Drosophila flies in California’s Central Valleyin 1991.

“At the time, none of us expected that this researchmight contribute to human health. This is very exciting,once-in-a-lifetime opportunity,” Turelli said. “Wenever thought this would turn into an (dengue) erad-ication project.”

The researchers, however, said the process is com-plicated because Wolbachia is rare and its spreadthrough an insect population is disadvantaged becauseinfected mosquitoes lay fewer eggs than the uninfect-ed.

But once the frequency of the infection crosses acertain threshold, there is a strong advantage to itsspread, they hoped. PTI
