If “a ten” means perfection, “to the nines” implies approaching that ultimate goal. Others have offered other explanations, but

perhaps this is the source of the expression, “dressed to the nines”, an expression used to describe someone fancied up in their finest wear. Obviously, it isn’t only how well you are dressed or what you look like that can or should be taken “to the nines”. Anyone can appreciate when effort is made to excel, to succeed and to accomplish whatever worthy goals you may set out to achieve. Trying to realize the most good and to do one’s best is an important aspect of life. Human striving is the impetus for change, development, growth, and ultimate success. The Jewish year 5775, represented by the Hebrew letters, Taf Shin Ayin Hey, spells “Tishah” תשע״ה. “Tishah”, in Hebrew, means “nine”. With a great year of fantastic educational and cultural programming and important happenings ahead of us, YILC is headed toward “the nines”. The special times that comprise our Events Calendar augment the wonderful opportunities for adults and youth that are a regular part of what YILC is all about. Being a part of YILC affords us opportunities to partake in the fullness of all that our community offers. Torat Chaim, a Torah of vibrant life pulses through the building, with activities of Torah, Avodah and Gemillut Chassadim, daily. We have Daf Yomi, Amud Yomi with Rabbi Gershon Kramer, Halacha Shiurim, Parshah Shiurim, Navi Shiurim with our Assistant Rabbi, Rabbi Ya’akov Trump and Talmud Shiurim. Our dedication to the Jewish future is engendered in Youth Department activities and Minyanim for Teens and Youth that are the pride of our Shul. The Young Israel of Lawrence-Cedarhurst Calendar of Events highlights some of the significant cultural and educational offerings that our Shul has planned for the benefit and enjoyment of its members and friends. Join us as we take YILC to the nines!

Discussion Moderator: Co-producer, Ilya Feoktistov A production of Americans for Peace and Tolerance, with APT’s Charles Jacobs as special consultant; produced, directed and written by Avi Goldwasser and Ilya Feoktistov, The J Street Challenge lines up a phalanx of illustrious academics and activists to expose the deception, the lies, and the anti-Israel animus behind J Street. But the film is not a snooze-parade of talking heads; ideas - important ideas - are supplemented with illustrations, maps, videos, and images both heartwarming and heartbreaking.

In 1944, 22-year-old Hannah Senesh

parachuted into Nazi-occupied Europe

with a small group of Jewish volunteers

from Palestine. Theirs was the only military

rescue mission for Jews that occurred in

World War II. Narrated by Academy

Award winner Joan Allen, the multi-award-

winning Blessed is the Match follows the

remarkable journey of this young

Hungarian poet and diarist, paratrooper

and resistance fighter.

Both devastating and inspiring, Blessed is the

Match offers an intimate portrait of a singularly talented, courageous

and complex girl who believed that one person could be a flame that

burns brightly in even the darkest hours.

nts T here are many things that we do together as a shul. We daven

together, we learn together, we rejoice and we mourn together. Part of building our community involves just being together even outside of that framework. We have a full calendar of exciting events throughout this coming year. We come together both in and out of shul, as one community.
